Dear Colleagues,
The second day of WCE2024 started early with outstanding plenary talks from Naja Hulvej Rod (University of Copenhagen) speaking on health complexity, and Charles Agyemang (University of Amsterdam) speaking on the global obesity epidemic.

Professor Rod presented a compelling argument for a new approach to epidemiological problems that embraces complex systems thinking, including appreciation of complex feedback loops and non-linear effects.

Professor Agyemang discussed the differential burden of obesity and metabolic disease associated with international migration in African populations, arguing for intervention strategies to be adapted to local contexts.

There are more than 770 research posters being presented at the meeting, and the poster session this afternoon generated lively discussions among WCE delegates. Poster themes included epidemiology & ageing, lifecourse epidemiology, as well as cardiovascular epidemiology.

This afternoon’s interactive session titled “Have directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) fulfilled their promise?” delivered vibrant engagement. Here, an audience member fuels the debate, led by Professors Margarita Moreno Betancur, Peter Tennant and Neil Pearce.

The interactive session asking “Are traditional cohorts outdated?” included an exchange between panelists Professors Mauricio Barreto and Karen Canfell. Early birds tomorrow morning will be rewarded with Professor Canfell’s plenary presentation on the role of epidemiology in Human Papillomavirus eradication.
We look forward to seeing you at 8.00 sharp tomorrow for another exciting day of epidemiology from across the globe!
