Dear Colleagues,
We began the third day of WCE2024 with another two incredible plenary presentations that provided real-world examples of how epidemiology has helped to address recent global epidemics.

Professor David Serwadda (Makerere University) began the day examining how epidemiology has learned from the epidemics of HIV and COVID, drawing on decades of insights from the Rakai Health Sciences Program in Uganda.

Then, Professor Karen Canfell (University of Sydney) explored the burden of cervical cancer in women and how Human Papillomavirus prevention efforts are shaping a future where the elimination of cervical cancer is possible.

Later in the day, as part of our “Meet the Plenary Speaker” series, Early Career Epidemiologists had a special opportunity to interact with Professor Canfell in a small group setting to ask questions about her presentation and her work more broadly.

The poster sessions continued to stimulate lively discussions, with WCE2024 delegates engaging around a range of themes including social epidemiology, perinatal epidemiology and epidemiologic methods.

This afternoon’s interactive session titled “Racial and Ethnic Classifications in Epidemiology” included a presentation by Dr Zinzi Bailey (University of Minnesota) who challenged conference attendees to think critically about how concepts of race and ethnicity are employed in epidemiologic research around the world.

We look forward to seeing you at tomorrow morning at 08.00 for the final day of the meeting – filled with plenary talks, oral abstract sessions, poster presentations and the interactive sessions!
